Monitoring your sleep quality is crucial for maintaining optimal health and enhancing your overall well-being. A sleep score offers a simple, yet powerful, way to gauge how restorative your sleep is. By tracking your sleep score, you can better understand your sleep hygiene, identify areas for improvement, and adjust your habits to achieve more efficient and refreshing rest. With Pillow, every sleep session is analyzed to provide you with an easy-to-understand score that reflects your nightly performance, empowering you to make positive changes.

How Pillow Calculates Your Sleep Score

For every sleep session, Pillow generates a sleep score ranging from 0 to 100% by analyzing several key factors. The score considers the total sleep duration, the overall duration of your sleep session, the time spent in various sleep stages (such as REM, light, and deep sleep), and the frequency and duration of awakenings or disruptions during the night. This comprehensive evaluation ensures that your sleep score accurately reflects the quality of your sleep.

Understanding the Sleep Score Range

A sleep score between 75 and 100% indicates a very good sleep session, suggesting that you enjoyed sufficient restorative sleep with minimal disruptions. A score between 45 and 74% reflects a generally acceptable session, though there may be room for improvement. Scores below 44% point to poor sleep quality, signaling the need for changes in your sleep routine or environment.

How to View Your Sleep Score

You can check your sleep score for every session by exploring the detailed session view in Pillow. Each session includes a dedicated display where the sleep score is clearly visible alongside other sleep metrics. Additionally, the sleep diary features sleep rings—most notably, the outer purple ring—that visually represent your sleep quality. When you have more than one sleep session in a day, Pillow calculates a weighted average, giving more importance to the session with the longest duration. For instance, if you sleep for eight hours in one session and three hours in another, the overall daily score will be more heavily influenced by the eight-hour session.

Monitoring Trends and Comparing Metrics

While reviewing individual sleep scores is useful, tracking the trend over time is even more valuable. Pillow’s Trends tab provides a weekly, monthly, and annual view of your sleep quality score, allowing you to observe how your sleep improves or declines over time. This trend analysis is enhanced by the ability to compare your sleep score with other health-related metrics—such as steps taken, heart rate, caffeine and alcohol consumption, and dietary calorie intake—offering a comprehensive picture of your overall well-being.

Quick and Convenient Ways to Monitor Your Sleep Score

Pillow makes it easy to stay on top of your sleep quality with several quick-glance features. The sleep report notification delivers a daily summary that includes your sleep score and key insights. Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets provide instant access to your most recent sleep data without needing to open the app. Additionally, the sleep rings and sleep quality complications on your Apple Watch let you monitor your sleep score directly from your wrist.
