Accurate sleep tracking is essential, but sometimes the raw data needs a personal touch. Whether it’s trimming a session, merging two sleep periods, or updating notes on your wake-up mood, Pillow offers a range of powerful editing tools that let you refine every detail of your sleep tracking. These features ensure that your sleep data truly reflects your experiences and provides the most useful insights to help you improve your sleep habits.

Editing Your Sleep Session Duration

Sometimes your recorded sleep session might not perfectly capture your actual time in bed. With Pillow, you can edit the start and end times of your sleep session, either trimming or expanding it as needed. If you choose to expand a session, Pillow will attempt to recalculate the sleep stages—provided that the session was recorded with Apple Watch data. (Note that if the session was tracked using only an iPhone, or if you’re using Apple’s Sleep Stage data, recalculation won’t be possible.)

Adjusting Specific Segments Within a Session

There may be instances when you know you were awake or asleep during a particular period, even if Pillow’s sensors didn’t catch it correctly. In these cases, you can select a specific segment of your sleep session and manually indicate whether you were awake or asleep. Again, if the session includes Apple Watch data, Pillow will try to re-analyze and update the sleep stages accordingly, ensuring that your sleep analysis is as precise as possible.

Merging Multiple Sleep Sessions

Sometimes Pillow may detect multiple sleep sessions during a single night, and you might prefer to view them as one continuous session. Merging sessions is simple: tap the edit button at the bottom of the screen on your iPhone or iPad. If multiple sessions are detected, a dialog will appear where you can select the sessions to merge. You’ll also be asked to specify how to treat the time between sessions—choosing “awake” or “asleep.” (Remember that selecting “asleep” will trigger a re-analysis, which is possible only if the session includes sufficient Apple Watch data.)

Re-Analyzing Your Sleep Data

If you’re wearing an Apple Watch during sleep, Pillow allows you to re-analyze your sleep data for any given day. Simply launch Pillow on your iPhone, navigate to the day you wish to re-examine using the calendar icon at the top right, and scroll down to select the “Re-analyze” option. A dialog will guide you through the process, updating your sleep session with the latest calculations.

Editing Audio Recordings

Pillow’s audio recording feature captures important ambient sounds like snoring or sleep talking. If you need to refine these recordings, you can do so easily on your iPhone. Navigate to the day containing the session you wish to edit, tap on the session to open its detail view, then select the “Audio” tab. Here, tap on the Audio Recordings button to view your recordings. From this list, you can mark recordings as favorites or delete unwanted clips—giving you full control over your audio data.

Modifying Sleep Tracking Presets

Your sleep tracking presets define the settings for each session, and Pillow makes it easy to adjust these configurations as your needs change. To edit a preset, open Pillow on your iPhone or iPad and tap on the alarm tab (bottom left on iPhone, top left on iPad). Swipe to the preset you want to modify and tap the edit button in the top right corner. A dialog will appear, allowing you to change the configuration. If you’re using Pillow on your Apple Watch, you can also edit presets there, although not all options are available on the watch.

Updating Notes and Mood for a Sleep Session

Beyond sensor data, personal observations add valuable context to your sleep. If you’ve used Pillow’s mood tracking or notes feature, you can update these entries after the fact. To do so, open the sleep session detail view—either via the sleep diary (top left) or through the “Sleep History” tab—and tap the respective buttons under the sleep stage diagram to edit your mood or notes.

Pillow’s robust editing features empower you to tailor your sleep data until it perfectly reflects your experience. By fine-tuning session durations, adjusting specific segments, merging sessions, re-analyzing data, and editing audio recordings, presets, and personal notes, you gain complete control over your sleep tracking. This level of customization ensures that your insights are accurate and actionable—helping you make the changes necessary for more restorative, high-quality sleep.
